A Real Life Story of God’s Goodness

By Diane Foy / Season of life: Senior Adult, Homemaker

Scripture

So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine.  Tie them to your hands and wear them on your foreheads as reminders.  Teach them to your children.  Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.  ~ Deuteronomy 11:18-19

I can still see this event happening in technicolor as if it were yesterday.  It was a sunny day, and I had decided to take all three children (ages 8 and under) on a drive in the yellow station wagon to deliver a pie to a friend.  We traveled the rural, narrow, curvy road until we arrived at her home.  After exchanging pleasantries, we piled back into the reliable wagon to make our way back home.

Our faithful “Yellow Bird” would not start.  I tried numerous times and nothing happened.   We were out in the country so I was feeling stressed thinking of how I would get back home with three children in tow. (One in a carseat in the front!) I can remember whispering a quick prayer…nothing fancy.

I looked up to see what was likely a drunk driver coming out of a curve in the road, driving at a very high rate of speed on the wrong side of the road.  The car sped past at what could easily have been the moment we entered the road. I turned the key again and the car started immediately.  I was overcome with thanksgiving in His glorious presence.

There is no doubt in my mind that our God intervened.  I told the children this story and continue to tell it to this day. It is a real life story of God’s goodness and help in our time of need, and it reminds us that delays and disappointments in life are often God’s protection for us.

Closing Prayer

Dear Father God,  as we go into the Christmas Season and share Your glorious story with family and friends, remind us to share our own personal stories of your miraculous power and grace no matter how small they may seem.  Our Almighty God is faithful.  We are most thankful.  We are blessed.

Lord God, may I “repeat the sounding joy” of who You are today!
